Battle of the Bulge..

Day one..

We travel from the Channel Coast to our hotel, stopping en route for lunch in the historic Grand Place in Mons. Before we get to our hotel, we see a surviving German Panther tank in the small village of Celle, one of the furthest points reached by the German offensive.

 

Day two..

We visit various sites around Bastogne. We tour the Bastogne Barracks Museum, home to US 101st Airborne Division's headquarters during the battle. Also on site is a  military vehicle restoration workshop. We also see the magnificent American memorial at Mardasson and visit some of the scenes of the fighting around the town, particularly at Foy and at Noville. To end our day, we call at the German Military Cemetery at Recogne.

 

Day three..

We cross the German border to see some dragon’s teeth, part of the Siegfried Line defences. Nearby are memorials to German and US units that fought here. We then spend the day visiting several of the sites associated with the advance and demise of the infamous Kampfgruppe Peiper, one of the spearhead formations of 6th Panzer Army. We stop at Baugnez, site of the Malmedy Massacre and visit La Gleize, home to a King Tiger tank abandoned by the Germans.

 

Day four..

We ride to the American Military Cemetery at Henri-Chapelle, site of almost 8,000 burials, many of them casualties of the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to Bastogne, we stop en route to see a British tank destroyer and the 51st Highland Division’s memorial at La Roche-en-Ardenne. We call at Houffalize to see the recently restored Panther tank and return to Bastogne in time to visit the stunning US Airborne Museum in town.

 

Our last day..

We call at “Parker’s Crossroads”, scene of fierce fighting. We then call at Grandmenil to see another preserved Panther tank. As we head out of the region, we call at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Hotton, a reminder of the British involvement in the battle. Heading for Calais and our Channel crossing, we stop once again in Mons for lunch.
